How to Prevent Employees from Disabling Location Services (GPS)
It is possible to make sure employees cannot disable GPS on their Android or iOS mobile devices when clocking in in ClockShark, here’s how to set it up.
In ClockShark web portal, if you see a red X next to the time in the recorded job, it means the device successfully sent the punch (clock in/out), but GPS location could not be obtained.
This usually happens because:
- The employee’s device does not have Location Services enabled properly.
- The Require Location Services (GPS) to clock in via mobile setting is not turned on.
Require GPS for Clock In
ClockShark has a setting that ensures employees must have proper Location Services enabled to clock in.
Requirements for Devices

For iPhone users, you should set the Location Services to Always. Learn more in Turn Location Services and GPS on or off on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

For Android users, you should set the Location Services to All the time. Learn more in Manage location permissions for apps.

For users with newer devices, if you see the ‘Precise Location’ option, you should enable it as well.
If these settings are not enabled, the employee cannot clock in and will be automatically clocked out.
Enable the Setting
- In the ClockShark web portal, go to Admin > Employees.
- Create a new employee or click an existing employee’s name.
- On the Update Employee page, click the GPS & Time Clock tab.
- Tick the checkbox for Require GPS to Clock in from the mobile app.
- Click Create Employee or Update Employee to save the change.
Making the Setting Work Immediately
After enabling the setting, it may take several hours for the feature to appear in the mobile app.
To make it work right away, the employee can use one of the options below:
Option 1: Log out and log back in to the ClockShark app. To do it:
- Tap the initials button in the top right corner.
- Tap My Account.
- Tap Sign out.
- Log back in to the ClockShark app.
Option 2: Sync the device manually. To do it:
- Tap the initials button in the top right corner.
- Tap Sync Web and App Data.
